Amphitheatre for a Tree

Notices

Amphitheatre for a Tree is Haigh Woodland Park’s newest garden and one of the first major milestones in the ongoing transformation of the Haigh Hall estate. This stunning outdoor space blends landscape design, history, art, and community spirit into a unique destination for visitors of all ages.

Inspired by an 18th‑century painting of Sir Roger and Lady Bradshaigh, the garden reimagines the historic formal terraces and sweeping views that once defined Haigh’s landscape. At its heart stands a symbolic Handkerchief Tree, kindly funded by Wigan Rotary Club as part of their centenary celebrations - a living tribute to community dedication and heritage. Surrounding its base, a brass crown reflects imagery from the Wigan borough coat of arms and historical references to the Crawford family, blending storytelling with striking design.

This thoughtfully designed garden is more than a beautiful destination, it is a social space where community life can flourish. Visitors can enjoy:

  • Outdoor performances, from poetry readings to local music and theatre
  • Family friendly activities throughout the year, including lawn games, craft sessions, and seasonal celebrations
  • A serene place to rest during a walk through Haigh Woodland Park.

Created by award winning landscape designer Michael John McGarr in collaboration with artists Al and Al, the garden explores how thoughtful design can support biodiversity, enhance wellbeing, and contribute to climate resilience. It stands as the first new formal garden at Haigh Hall in over a century and marks an exciting new chapter for the estate.

Amphitheatre for a Tree is located just past Haigh’s historic courtyard, before you get to the adventure play area. The garden is free to visit and accessible at all times.
